These are the children of one of my dear clients. We did baptism pictures for her oldest child a few years back. I was so excited when she contacted me again to do the next child's baptism pictures. And you can see why.... these girls are so beautiful and EASY to photograph! They were such a delight to work with. She decided that we should do "sibling" pictures too. So much fun!

So many wonderful things have happened for me and my little family the last little while. We feel so blessed and recognize that each little moment we enjoy is such a gift and not one to be taken for granted. A comfortable home, food on the table, children who are healthy and happy, my husband's career has grown leaps and bounds and I have the chance to stay at home with my children and pursue my passion of photography. We've had some very rough times the past few years and thank our lucky stars that we are getting over the obstacles we have faced. It is nice to be able to breathe a little again :)

With all this gratitude, my heart aches for the many families that are struggling financially, or with their health... or both. My heart goes out to families that need medical treatments and can't afford them, especially when it involves children.

SO... during the months of March and April, I want to donate a portion of every session that is booked with me. I will be donating this money to Primary Children's Hospital. Will you please help me out with this?

Many moons ago, I started my love for photography by taking pictures of flowers and still life. I sold large prints for home decor at boutiques and little ocean side markets in southern Cal. I had huge dreams of selling my images to places like ZGallerie, Nordstrom, and the like. I NEVER thought that I would enjoy taking pictures of PEOPLE :).... until I tried it. Little did I know that I would soon enjoy the challenge of capturing a person's beauty on camera. I LOVE being a portrait photographer. And I love photographing flowers, and still life for home decor. They are now BOTH my passion. Here's one I shot yesterday that will soon reign above my master bed.

This is a photo that I took back in 2003 in Innsbrook Austria. I have had it printed on canvas and stretched so it needs no frame. It is a 30x30 print, a very nice size for most walls. It has been hanging in my home for several years and now it needs a new home. It just doesn't work in my new color scheme I've got going in my kitchen/family groom, so I figured rather than let it be lonely in the cold storage... I would let it go to a good home:)

This print's value is around $400, but I am willing to part with it @$200 (or bring in your offer) because I have had it for so many years and I've been enjoying it for that long!

This little angel wanted nothing to do with the camera and the props, although we finally did get her to sleep for a bit. All she wanted was her mommy. Can you blame her? I've been a bad blogger lately and it's really sad because I have so many fun sessions to show you! I am a little in "catch up" mode, so I can only blog one image for now. At least now you know I still exist!

I LOVE this family! They are returning clients and I seriously could not have asked for an easier shoot. Both kids listened so well... I almost had to pinch myself to see if I was dreaming! Thanks for using me again Celeste! Can't wait to show you the rest! (hey, that just rhymed!)

My main editing software has decided to no longer import files into it. NICE :( So, what does this mean? It means I can work on anything until I upgrade it. It has just suddenly decided to not work for me anymore. There you go... right in the middle of the busy season and when I have STACKS of files just sitting there waiting for me to work on them.

For those of you who are waiting for your images, thank you for your patience. I guess it's time me to take a trip to Pictureline and dump a whole load of money for my upgrades to my computer (weep and wail!) It's fun to have the upgrades, but not so fun to spend the hundreds of dollars!!!

So this little stud participated in my portfolio sessions and we had such a blast! You will get to see those images in a little while.

But for now, check out these! Before his session, his mom asked if I could shoot a few of him in his church clothes for his upcoming baptism. I was happy to do so! I LOVE how these turned out! Good job Mr. "C"... you look "studly" (I used that term a lot during the session and he thought that was such a funny word, or maybe that I was just a little odd :)

I had someone ask me the other day after a photo session if I dreaded going home to sift through the photos and start the editing process. Yes, I admit... parts of it are a little overwhelming to me. And more often than not, I immediately criticize my own work "why didn't I place her arm somewhere else!"... or "dang it, I made the same mistake again!" But, once I get past the initial shock of viewing my photos, I start to see the fun emerge. And when I come across a photo like this one...I almost jump up and down in anticipation to start working on it! (yes... I know, I'm a little cheesy).

Does anyone know why blogger takes your images and makes them look fuzzier than they really are? Every time I post, I am highly disappointed in the quality of the image after it is published. It may be hard to see it by just looking at my posts for the first time (with an unbiased eye), but if you could compare them to the REAL image, they definitely do not compare. Oh well, I'm getting a new PROFESSIONAL blog soon, so maybe my troubles will be over then. :) Just wondering if anyone knows any info about this stuff. Thanks.

This part of the workshop was indoors in an amazing mansion. We worked with ONLY natural light and our mentors helped us concentrate on shooting our images with the intention of editing them purely to black and white. I am in love with the soft lighting on the little blonde girl's face and her very natural expression.

If you liked the first image from my workshop (the previous post), there is more to come! Just be patient... I'm in the middle of packing. We're moving next week! Yahoo!

Mentoring Session!

I cannot tell you just how much fun my mentoring session was yesterday! I feel like I learned some invaluable lessons that will help me grow as a photographer. I have the awesome opportunity to be mentored by 3 amazing photographers in just a few weeks. In preparation for this event, they have asked me to prepare my portfolio for review. As I have been "thumbing" through some of my favorite images of the past few years, I couldn't help but re-edit this beautiful photo of stunning Yukia. I can't believe just how much I have learned since I shot her wedding. Tell me what you think of the difference between these two photos...I am just so excited to be learning, every step of the way. I can't wait to see what this mentorship has to teach me!

Why does Custom Photography Cost More?

I found this article a few months back and wanted to stand up and cheer! For all of us custom photographers out there, we are asked the question quite frequently "why do your 8x10's cost anywhere from $15-$40 (this a price range from different photographers I've seen here in Utah), when I can get one at Costco or Walmart for less than a few dollars?"

It is hard to explain the time and effort (the blood sweat and tears, as I would call it) that goes into our custom product. So for all of you who would like to know why my prices (and many other Utah photographer's prices) are what they are, please click on the link and it will completely explain why!

With this note in mind, I appreciate each of my clients who see the value in custom photography. They know that they are getting much more than a quick shoot down at the mall. They are getting a unique experience that is completely "hand-made" for them.

We had a little photographer's exchange yesterday. The lighting was dreamy, and the girls were just too much fun! We all learned just how intimidating it can be to be in front of the camera. I think we all decided we prefer to be behind the camera! I am in love with the blue metal structure and red barn that we (aka Raquel) found for us to shoot at. In fact, I love it so much that ALL my edits are in color thus far! Enjoy these ladies!

I have to take my hat off to my husband for being such a great assistant during this shoot... he kept our little boy laughing and smiling the whole time! I think it was one of the easiest shoots I've ever had! My little boy has such a fun and creative spirit about him and it really shows in these pictures. What really makes my heart leap is the fact that I know that the delight on his face is from watching and admiring his dad....he loves him soooo much! Thanks to my boys for being so patient with mom....I really wanted some shots of my boy, just like I do for my clients....and it's taken me a while to get them. Now I just don't know which ones to print out and where to put them in the house....ooooh, the fun begins!!!!

I thought I would post a few images while I am processing your session...this will help with the wait, I hope. I have really had to slow down on my work while being on bed rest. Clients that are needing their pictures and/or CD's, just know I haven't forgotten you. I just have to be careful how much I do right now. Bedrest and in need of a pedicure!

Okay....so about a week ago, I woke up feeling a little strange. I went to the bathroom and found that I was bleeding HEAVILY. I won't go into details to spare the faint in heart, but let's just say that I was really worried that I would either have the baby there in the bathroom or that he was no longer living inside my belly. To make matters more scary, because of my blood type, I have to avoid bleeding like the plaque because it could actually harm my baby (the RH Factor...you can read about it online). Luckily, I had just had my Rogam shot which is supposed to protect the baby, should our blood ever mix during pregnancy. Nonetheless, we were extremely worried....we rushed to the hospital, they ran tests, did an ultrasound and had found that my placenta had lifted a little. Who knows why...I can't remember doing any crazy cartwheels or stunts, but obviously my body was reacting to something. The doctor said it could even be from the baby's movement. That, I would not doubt, because this baby MOVES like crazy. If you ever want to see a SI-FI moment, come over and watch my belly move into odd shapes as my baby stretches out. You can literally see a fist slide around like he's just playing under a thin sheet. So, back to the hospital. I stayed there overnight, as they kept me hooked to an I.V which made me urinate all too often! I had minor contractions which they were able to stop, thankfully. My little guy is only 32 weeks as of wednesday. He needs to cook a little longer! Baby is doing fine, but I've got to take it easy now.

So life has slowed way down...my doctor put me on bedrest for at least another month. He told me at my last visit that he was very surprised at how well I was doing...I think he really expected me to have my baby this past week!

So bedrest.....what in the heck does that even mean? I don't think I even know what resting in bed is. My idea of "slowing down" consists of catching up on all the things that I normally can't get to (unpacking boxes that we still haven't looked at since we moved, catching up on personal stuff like baby books, editing Andrew's 3 year old pictures....I've been trying to get to these for the past 6 months! and finishing up my last photography projects before the year is over). My doc will let me sit up and work a little from a computer, but I've really got to tame myself and SLOW DOWN for once in my life. Not sure how to do it, but it's vital for my little baby right now.

So what does this mean for Bliss Portraits? It means that everything is slightly on hold or at least slowed down for now. I have to take it one day at a time. Plan on some great things for the new year in 2009, but for now....I'm on a long holiday....if you want to call it that!

P.S. I know my nail polish looks awful in this picture! What do you expect when I am as large as the moon and catch reach my toe nails! Nathan... it's time for another pedicure, baby!

I couldn't help but post this storyboard sample. I'll have to show the original images verses these "beefed up" versions. The Blues just POP out and I just love what this processing did to little "T's" skin!

Thoughts anyone? Not sure what a PC does to these super bright images...but they look great on my Mac!

Summer Days...

My son and I went to the neighborhood park today. We had so much fun splashing in puddles, riding bikes and climbing like monkeys... we'll, let's just say that my son had fun doing this, not me. A few weeks ago, I tried to barrel through the tunnel on the jungle gym and just about got stuck with my pregnant belly being about the same size as the tunnel! A neighbor was walking by at the time, and I'm sure he was wondering what the heck I was trying to do... or maybe he was thinking that he needed to call the fire department to come get me out! So, I've decided I need to not make a scene anymore, and leave the child's play equipment for well.... children. At least for now....until I can get my body back!

Well, just thought I would share...I just can't believe how much I love my little guy. He's growing up so fast and becoming sooo much fun!

Ok, I officially need a lesson in how to upload multiple images. I hold my breath each time I try and upload a new one....and it usually only let's me upload a few at a time! How frustrating! So I gave up early tonight with just these two images because I am trying to upload a wedding to it's online gallery and that isn't working either! Arrrggghhh! I guess I just need to get some rest and start fresh in the morning!

So you've been probably wondering where the heck I have been... Sorry to have neglected my blog! I've got some great stuff to show you, but little time right now and for some reason blogger won't upload my pictures! Brandy and Tyler, you're proofs will be up tomorrow or Wednesday evening. I was going to post a few photos here, but blogger is not working for me... Thanks to those clients who have been extremely patient with me! We have been busy with our move (we are finally in our new place!)... and if you haven't heard by now.... I'M HAVING A BABY BOY IN DECEMBER! Yeah, I know... I'm a little slow to announce it... between the nausea and major siatic pain, I haven't been a happy camper. But we are excited for this little boy to come into our family.

For those who want to book a photo session this fall, hurry and reserve your spot. I am taking only a small amount of sessions because of my pregnancy and they are filling up fast. I'll try blogging again tomorrow night, cross your fingers that I can upload an image or two!

This family came to me wanting photos that were very natural and candid. We did the shoot in and just outside of their home. They were so laid back and so kind. Fun Family in Urban Setting

Emily is my friend and the sister I never had. We've only known each other for a short time, but our friendship is so tight that I feel like we've known each other forever! We had a blast cruising through the alley ways of down town Salt Lake for their family photo shoot. I loved all the colorful backdrops of the buildings and thought it was so funny when a scruff man drove by and yelled out his window "Why in the $!@#* are you taking pictures here?! It's so @#%$* ugly!) Oh well, I guess we all see things differently. So I don't know if I was having a moment of insanity, but I didn't even bring an assistant... and boy, did their little one like to run and not sit still even for one minute! I owe you more pictures because of this, Em! So here's sneak peak of this beautiful family... you all should be models, I'm tellin' ya!

This is my sweet nephew... I had such a fun time taking pictures of my brother's cute family at Wheeler Farm. I could have snapped pictures all day of their little boy, he was just so content and so cute! I just love the shots of him in the tractor... I wish I had pictures like this of my boy at that age! Sneak Peak! I've got more for you, Raquel... so check back.

Raquel and I had a "photo exchange" on Saturday. We are both in the portrait business and decided that it was time that we had some decent photos of ourselves. So we turned our cameras on each other! We had so much fun and both of us realized that we are much more comfortable BEHIND the camera than in front of it! (Although, I think Raquel looks stunning in the image below! She looks so natural and comfortable... what a hottie!) It was good for me to experience what my clients feel when doing a photo shoot.

Oh and yes... you'll get to see a few of me. Yikes! I'm nervous!

Gearing up for Recipe Book Photo Shoot!

This is a little "teaser" for my friend, Dawn Wessman, the author of a new cookbook that she is compiling this year. She has asked me to come on board and do the food images for her book and website. (I'll keep everyone posted about its publishing so that you can go and find one just as soon as it hits the bookstores!) It is bound to be an outstanding resource because of her practical solutions to eating right, even with a busy schedule or on a small budget. Two words describe this hot couple... "perfectly matched". In the little time that I have had to get to know them, I've noticed how well they compliment each other. They were so easy to work with and made my job oh-so fun! I couldn't believe how pleasant the groom was and how willing he was to go along with my crazy ideas! Dark downtown allies, a homeless man digging through the dumpster only yards away. (what a sharp contrast to the beautiful and fresh love this couple has!) and Brandy, Wow... So... I couldn't get blogger to work for a few days and now it's only allowing me to add a few photos to each post! ERGGGH!!! I'll have to post more later. Anyway, this cute little guy was such a delight to photograph! He was so at ease and knew how to work the camera, just like his model mommy and daddy. I decided to post these images in black and white because of the beautiful contrast in each photo. Very modern and fresh! I hope that these show up well on a PC. They are fantastic on a Mac. Every time I view my work on a PC, I cringe. Especially black and whites.... for some reason they don't show up nearly as great as the final print. Well, there's my two cents about Mac's and PCs. Note: any client that has a PC and wants to view their proofs on my Mac, please feel free to come see them anytime! Enjoy! I'll post more soon...

oldie, but a goodie... These are a few pictures of baby "T" from his a 3 mo. photo session. We will be shooting his 6 month pictures on Thursday. I just can't believe how fast babies grow up! I swear it was just yesterday that I was doing his mother's maternity session and his newborn shoot! I'll post some of his Thursday shoot just as soon as I can!

Serious and Moody

I love the moodiness of this image. The black and white really enhances the overall feel. I have this same image in color and his blue eyes just pop out and the pillows are are bright green (a great backdrop!) I'll have to post the color version later. The funny thing about this "moody" photo is that we were having a lot of light-hearted fun... no seriousness about us at that moment! Suddenly, my little guy struck a serious pose. I think he's catching on to the idea that it is "cool" to be in front of the camera. We'll see how long this phase lasts! Photographer friends... and my lovely clients... let me know what you think! So... I've been designing headers for this blog. You'll see the one above this comment with beautiful miss "C". And for all of you with a critical eye, I know that it is hanging over the edge on the right side... (still trying to figure that one out!) The header will be changing a lot in the next little while until I feel settled with my final decision. (Whatever "final" means in the world of design where your options are limitless!) Its just too much fun designing these and there are so many images that I think would be "the one". Just working on a wedding album and thought I might share a page from it. This is a flush mount album... meaning the custom-designed pages come all the way to the edge of the page. I must admit that I am going a little bananas with business cards right now! I've had to play catch up with photo shoots that haven't received their cards yet. So you get to see what I normally don't show everyone! I just LOVE this one! Can you tell I have an underlying color theme running through all my business cards? Bright and bold!
